The majority consists of the collection purchased in 1906 by Brother from Mr. L. van den Bogaert from ‘s-Hertogenbosch. Although not all mounted birds are preserved in perfect condition, this collection remains of great importance. Some specimens were the first documented observations of their species in the Netherlands and are included in the Avifauna of the Netherlands. Many birds from our collection have since become (very) rare and are listed on the Red or Orange List of Dutch breeding birds.

A special highlight is the mounted European bison, which was examined more closely together with Artis in 2020. It turned out to be “Schaljapin”, the founding father of the breeding program that was started in 1931 by Artis director Armand Sunier to prevent the extinction of the European bison.

Ethnology: Authentic Sculptures and Masks

Our Ethnology collection mainly contains original sculptures and masks from former Dutch East Indies and Africa. These objects, often used ritually in their country of origin, are authentic and preserved with respect. Various pieces have been appraised by auction house Christie’s and recognized as valuable.

Geology: Fossils from the Cretaceous Period

Of particular significance is the fossil collection, donated by the Van den Burgh family. These fossils, originating from Cap Blanc Nez in France, date from the Cretaceous period. The collection consists mainly of ammonites, bivalves, and gastropods and is accurately documented.

Archaeology: Flint Hand Axes

Within the archaeological collection, the flint hand axes from Brother Christofoor’s collection are real eye-catchers. These tools date from the Paleolithic period and come from well-known sites in England.

Each collection in our museum – Natural History, Ethnology, Geology and Archaeology – has special highlights that underscore the rich diversity and history of our collection.
